Commercial construction, inspections and specialized permits may involve either BCFPD Life Safety or Boone County Resource Management. Select the option that best describes your request.
NEW COMMERCIAL PROJECT
Apply for the building permit through Boone County.
Commercial projects outside the City of Columbia begin with Boone County’s building-permit process. Projects within BCFPD jurisdiction will also be reviewed for applicable fire-code requirements.
CONSTRUCTION INSPECTION
Schedule through Boone County Inspections.
After the permit has been issued and the work is ready, call with the permit number. When a fire-code inspection is required, BCFPD may perform the inspection with the county building inspector.
EXISTING PROPERTY OR HOME
Request an inspection from BCFPD.
Life Safety performs fire-prevention inspections for existing commercial properties within district jurisdiction. Residents may also request a courtesy home fire-safety inspection.

Begin with the Boone County building-permit application.

COMMERCIAL PROJECT PROCESS
Four steps before construction begins.
Submit the building-permit application
Complete the Boone County commercial building-permit application and provide all required project information and supporting documents.
Prepare the required plans
Boone County requires commercial project plans and supporting documentation for its coordinated zoning, building, fire, health, road and parking review.
Confirm BCFPD submission requirements
Before delivering the fire-district plan copy, digital files or plan-review fee, call BCFPD Life Safety to confirm the current submission and payment instructions.
Allow time for review
Boone County advises applicants to allow a minimum of three weeks for commercial plan review. Incomplete applications or missing documents may delay the review process.

CONSTRUCTION INSPECTIONS
Schedule building inspections through Boone County Resource Management.
Boone County’s Inspections Division performs building inspections outside the City of Columbia. When an inspection involves applicable fire-code requirements, BCFPD may inspect the project with the county building inspector.
SCHEDULING RULES
The Process Explained

Wait until the permit is issued.
Inspections cannot be scheduled until the required permit process is complete.

Call with the permit number.
The county does not accept inspection requests by email or through inspectors in the field.

Keep the permit card on site.
An inspector may decline the inspection when the card is unavailable.

Expect an AM or PM window.
The county generally schedules the next business day and does not promise an exact time.

Plan for one inspection per site, per day.
Additional inspections require advance agreement with the inspector.

Be ready when the inspector arrives.
A reinspection fee may apply when work is incomplete or access is unavailable.
