Station 4 “Harrisburg”

Boone County Fire District Station 4 is located on E. Sexton Street in Harrisburg. Station 4 was the districts 4th fire station and serves the Town of Harrisburg and surrounding areas. Station 4 is a place “where everyone knows everyone” and the area has been protected by the fire district since the early 1970’s

Station 4 received its first piece of fire apparatus before there was even a station. Darrell Nichols, a previous member, was instrumental in getting Station 4 established. An “old” tire repair truck fitted with a water tank and pump, handed down from another station in the district was housed in Mueller Nichols Service Station in Harrisburg, a station owned by the father of volunteer Firefighter Loren Mueller who is still active at Station 4 today.

The first fire station was built just up the road from where the Dollar General is currently located. It was a two-bay fire station that was purchased from a building manufacturer in Columbia where another volunteer worked. The second piece of fire apparatus was new to its members, a 1970 military surplus 6-wheel drive Studebaker and would serve as the station’s first tanker for many years. Station 4 was also the recipient of an army surplus Jeep, used mainly to fight grass fires.

When the 1980 Bond issue passed, living quarters and a kitchen were added to the rear of the station to accommodate the districts residency program. Some of the original members reminisce about weekly poker games on the roof of the fire station. For fun, volunteers and members of the community would engage in “nickel, dime, quarter” games that would be played rooftop by using a ladder from one of the trucks.

Like other stations in the county, Station 4 was very community minded and family oriented. Before the 911 pager system was implemented, a phone system was established so when a fire truck was needed the volunteers home phone would ring along with the phone at the local service station letting them know of the emergency. Still today, you will hear from several of the original members “Can I get the name of the residence”. Because everyone knows everyone in Harrisburg, this is how they know exactly where they are responding to. Station 4 is first due to some of the largest grass fires in the county.

When the 1998 bond issue passed, the new 4 bay fire station was built on East Sexton Street where it sits today. Two of the original members still volunteer and respond to many emergencies in the Harrisburg area and throughout the fire district. Loren Mueller and John Timmerman both have more than 45 years each of dedicated volunteer service at this station. The station currently houses Engine 401, a 2010 fire engine, Tanker 405, a 2000 model tanker, and Truck 406, a 2009 Ford F450 used to respond to medical emergencies and grass fires.

There were 187 responses by dedicated volunteers out of station 4 in 2020.
