Station 6 “Sturgeon”

Boone County Fire Protection District Station 6 is located on east Wall Street in Sturgeon. Station 6 was established as the districts 6th station and serves the Town of Sturgeon and surrounding areas. Fire protection in Sturgeon has a long history of dedicated volunteers and partnerships dating back much further than when the Boone County Fire Protection established rural jurisdiction around Sturgeon in January of 1974.

The Town of Sturgeon had a well-established Volunteer Fire Department of 14 or 15 firefighters, run by Fire Chief John Roberts, that were seeking training opportunities to better serve those that they protected. The very young Boone County Fire Protection District was looking for options to better protect rural areas of Northern Boone County. Then, Boone County Fire Chief Bill Westhoff, director of Firemanship Training at the University of Missouri, was the perfect source for the fire departments eager to learn. The partnership was formed and a new 2 bay metal building was purchased by the City of Sturgeon was built by the volunteers of the Sturgeon Volunteer Fire Department who even poured the concrete floor themselves on Halloween night in 1973.

In January of 1974 Engine 601 was placed in service, a 1954 White Fire Engine, handed down from Station 1, which was originally purchased by the Central Missouri Radio Squad in 1965 for six thousand five hundred dollars from Flora Illinois. This engine responded from station 6 for many years and remains in the Fire Districts fleet today, serving as Truman’s Taxi which escorts Truman the Tiger around Faurot Field at every home football game. The second piece of fire apparatus, used by the City of Sturgeon, was a 1952 Ford Fire Engine. Additionally, a military surplus Jeep was added to Station 6 mainly to fight grass fires.

David Richie, who started as a volunteer with the Sturgeon Volunteer Fire Department would take over as their chief in 1978 while also serving as a captain at Station 6 for the Boone County Fire Protection District. David Richie served for many years as a dedicated volunteer for both departments and continues to serve the district today as one of the elected fire district board members.

One of the most memorable calls for service by Station 6 was a train accident on the tracks in the middle of town. In 1979 Gary Scott, a lieutenant with the fire district, was sitting at the railroad crossing and watched as the train suffered a mechanical failure sending metal through a rail car causing about 35,000 gallons of wood preservative to leak onto the ground which was suspected to be a hazardous material. The volunteers would engage in an emergency event lasting several days. They evacuated the entire Town of Sturgeon and helped with cleanup efforts taking breaks only long enough to sleep at the station.  The small rural town, that is no stranger to horse and buggies on its roadways, saw many news helicopters flying into northern Boone County to report on the train accident as this event drew national media attention.

In the mid 1980’s the Town of Sturgeon became part of the Boone County Fire Protection District and the Sturgeon Volunteer Fire Department was dissolved. In 1992, as a result of the 1990 Bond Issue, a new 4 bay fire station was built at its current location and with the passing of the 2014 Bond Issue the station was re-modeled, receiving many upgrades like a training room, storm shelter and 4 resident rooms. The station currently houses Engine 601, a 2015 fire engine, Tanker 605, a 2000 model tanker, Truck 606, a 2011 Ford F450 used to respond to medical emergencies and grass fires and Squad 604, a 2017 Rescue Squad.

There were 302 responses by dedicated volunteers out of Station 6 in 2020.
